Lightning Arresters

Lightning arresters, also called surge arresters or surge protectors, are devices designed to protect electrical systems from voltage spikes caused by lightning or switching surges. Station-type lightning arresters are heavy-duty units installed at substations or power plants, built to handle higher voltages and larger fault currents found in transmission systems. Distribution-type arresters, sometimes nicknamed “pole-top arresters,” are smaller units mounted on distribution poles or near transformers to protect lower-voltage equipment on local power lines. The main difference between them lies in their voltage rating and energy-handling capacity — station arresters are rated for transmission-level voltages, while distribution arresters are used on medium-voltage lines, typically measured in kilovolts (kV).
